Acupuncture as Preventive Maintenance

by Dr. Alan Magner

Acupuncture as a Preventive Measure

In these pages I’ve written articles about acupuncture’s ability to help heal many different medical issues. These have included migraine headaches, seasonal allergies, arthritis, back and neck pain, menopausal symptoms, emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety, fibromyalgia, smoking cessation and others.

Today I want to make you aware of using acupuncture for preventive maintenance.

Health and Wellness are the Goal

The ultimate goal of any medical treatment is to gain better health and vitality. Western medicine generally approaches this goal through the use of medicines or surgery to try to correct diseases that have advanced far enough to require potent intervention, often at the expense of unwelcome side-effects.

Just as your car requires preventive maintenance to keep it functioning and running properly, so does your body. Acupuncture alters the body’s internal energy systems and influences our immune system to help us not only to heal, but also to prevent early problems from advancing to become significant problems. This is preventive maintenance.

Many less dramatic medical problems are not easily addressed by western medicine-they may be considered minor issues and often patients are simply counseled to change their life-styles, with not much further intervention offered. However, an acupuncturist’s detailed approach to a person’s general characteristics, current and past symptoms, family history, past history, and examination can reveal minor imbalances for which an effective treatment plan can be formulated with the specific goal of obtaining better long-term health and vitality.

What can Acupuncture help prevent?

Examples of such issues that might be prevented from “blossoming” into serious problems include:

  • ill-defined fatigue states (“I’ve got no energy”)
  • mild depression (“I just feel blue a lot of times”)
  • stress-related upper back and neck pain (“My muscles are always so tight, or I get a lot of tension headaches”)
  • anxiety (“I feel jumpy and jittery”)
  • sleep disturbances (“I can’t fall asleep or stay asleep”)
  • bowel dysfunction (“I’ve got a “nervous” stomach, with cramps and diarrhea”)
  • immune disorders causing recurrent low-grade infections (“I keep getting sinusitis, or bronchitis, or gastroenteritis, or viral infections”)

Let acupuncture help you regain better health and vitality by treating and then preventing recurrence of your issues. Three or four visits annually after initial cure may be just what your body (and soul) needs. Use acupuncture for preventive maintenance.
