Acupuncture for Sciatica
by Dr. Alan Magner
Sciatica Pain
Sciatica is pain radiating from the lower back to the buttock, hip, thigh, leg and even foot. It has many causes but the main ones are due to degenerated and herniated discs and/or arthritis in the lower back. This leads to pressure with associated inflammation on the large sciatic nerve that originates in the lower part of the spinal cord and travels down to the lower leg.
Acupuncture is one of the proven methods of helping control the pain and hasten healing of sciatica naturally. Treatment may require 5 to 15 sessions to achieve satisfactory results. And best of all there are no side effects. Additionally, acupuncture has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for treatment of sciatica.
Narcotic medicines or surgical interventions are very aggressive ways to approach sciatic pain, and should be reserved for when nothing else is helping and pain is so severe that it limits your ability to function. Both of these treatments have the potential to cause significant side effects and have as good a chance of failure as any other approach.
For a safe, natural way of treating the pain of sciatica, free of side effects, call your medical acupuncturist for a free consultation.
