What is Reiki?
Reiki is a unique and very calming way of healing both physical and emotional problems. It’s originally a technique discovered 150 years ago by Dr. Mikao Ushui, a Japanese Christian theologian who was searching for a universal way of healing our minds and our bodies. After traveling around the world for several years, his quest took him to a sacred mountain top in Japan. There he sat and meditated for 21 days, when he suddenly was struck by a sense of bright light and symbols. At that moment he realized that “universal life energy” was flowing through him, and could be channeled or transmitted to others through his hands!
This learned process of transmitting healing energy to others through light touching of specific areas on the body is easily taught from Reiki master to Reiki student, and has spread throughout much of the world. It is now being practiced in the USA by lay people, physicians, nurses, veterinarians, and anyone who has the spiritual sense of wanting to help heal people or themselves (or even their pets).
How is Reiki performed?
Reiki is performed in a quiet, peaceful setting, with the recipient laying on a table, fully clothed and relaxed. The Reiki practitioner begins by gently laying his/her hands on the body, both front and back, and slowly moving them over specific areas. No intimate areas are touched in the process. As the hands move, both can often begin to sense energy flowing into the body. The hands may suddenly feel very warm, or cool, or a tingling sensation may be felt. Usually a great sense of relaxation and well-being occurs.
As the Reiki energy is absorbed, it travels to whatever part of the body needs healing. It’s the body’s innate intelligence that guides where the Reiki energy is needed. The Reiki practitioner cannot guide the energy to make specific cures! The energy heals for the highest good of the recipient, even if he/she doesn’t know what that is.
